As a freelance entrepreneur, I need to be surrounded by positive people and role models.
However, as I don’t have lots of entrepreneurs in my direct entourage, my role models are successful entrepreneurs who came from rags to riches. Oprah Winfrey, J.D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, or Dale Carnegie to name a few. I’ve even read their biographies to get boosted and uplifted as an entrepreneur.
Every time I feel discouraged, or that I need a boost, I go back to inspirational quotes from famous people who have succeeded in their respective trades. Here are my top 10 inspirational quotes. Enjoy!
1.When I thought I wasn’t good enough to be a copywriter
“Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration” – Thomas Edison
As a copywriter, I have to be inspired to transcribe the wishes of my clients and create persuasive and compelling copy for them. Though I’ve had nice testimonials for my work, I’ve never stopped working and training. The best thing I’ve done for my business is the following: write every day – even if I just wrote 50 words.
2. When I deal with my clients
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently – Warren Buffett
As a freelance copywriter, I’m a walking business. Therefore, I have to take care of my reputations and my clients. Consequently, I always treat my clients with utmost respect and I dedicate myself to my business. My reputation is the main thing that retains my clients.
3. When I need a vision for my business
“As long as you’re going to be thinking anyway, think big” – Donald Trump
Yes, I know. Donald Trump is not the favorite person of anyone right now. But before he got into politics, he was a successful businessman. I like his quote because he basically says that there shouldn’t be any boundaries to your ambitions, whatever they might be. And this is something I try to apply everyday.
4. When I work on a project
“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand” – Vince Lombardi
There’s no secret: success comes after hard work and dedication. Whatever I work on a project or on my own money-making website, I always have this quote in my mind. Hard work, dedication, determination, and giving my best to my projects are the key factors that will get me to success in all my endeavors.
5. When I get discouraged by my entourage
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great” – Mark Twain
I just love Mark Twain, he is one of my favorite writers. The piece of advice he gives is true and can be applied to any circumstance. When I started my business, few people encouraged me.
On the contrary, I had remarks on the fact that I should go back on a job because I used to earn a good living for myself. I cut myself from these people. My vision isn’t to be a corporate slave. On the contrary, I want to be free and live from my skills and talents, not from applying rules to protect a bank (I used to be a compliance officer in corporate and investment banks).
6. When I want to grow my business
“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune” – Jim Rohn
I never forget to learn something everyday, I’ve always been a proponent of self-learning, even when I was still an employee. Whether I want to learn new ways of writing or new skills related to my work, I’m always in.
These days, I’m thinking about creating my own landing page for my money-making website. In addition, I’m thinking of starting Youtube channels for my businesses – so a tutorial on video editing and YouTube marketing maybe?!
7. When I’m scared of risk
“To win without risk is to triumph without glory” – Pierre Corneille
One of my favorite quotes of Le Cid! Entrepreneurship is certainly risky, as you don’t necessary know the outcome. However, when you never take risks in your life, you’ll never be accomplished. Life is made of highs and lows. If you never try, how can you know if you’ll succeed or not?
8. When I beat myself up because I didn’t make the perfect copy
“The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake- you can’t learn anything from being perfect” – Adam Osbourne
Yes, sometimes I make mistakes. And even if I’m abhorring it because I’m the ultimate perfectionist, I actually evolve. Recognizing my mistakes on my copy helps me to grow in my skills and my business. I’ve created several websites which have crashed and burnt. Also, I’ve chosen the wrong copywriting niches.
I’ve even spotted a sentence that I didn’t like in recent work -whereas my client just told me that she loved my job! Anyway, making mistakes is not the end of the world. I learn and I carry on.
9. When I fail
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” – Thomas Edison
Yes, that good old Thomas Edison can talk about failure. He failed many times before succeeding making a bulb. I’ve also failed several times, but I decided that I’m not a quitter. Failure is the path to success. I just need to learn my lessons.
10. When I want to remember why I became an entrepreneur
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful “- Albert Schweitzer
Yes, I remember that I started my business because I want to do what I love, i.e. writing, promoting, educating, and helping people to market their products. I’m very happy to build my business day after day, even if it’s hard to get clients at the beginning.
Having a long-term strategy, I just need to apply my strategy and everything will be fine. I try to remain optimistic, though I’m a realist too!
